A Loyola University School of Law alum Melanie Leavitt, has been a licensed attorney since 1984. In the early years of her career, she represented unions. Since 1989, Melanie has dedicated her practice to helping those with disabilities with matters related to Social Security Insurance (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), as well as short and long-term disability Insurance, and disability retirement for state and federal employees. Thanks to her experience, Melanie is deeply familiar with all the Disability Determination Offices in Louisiana, local mental health providers, and local doctors.
Adam Meunier, also a grad of Loyola University Law School, has been a licensed attorney since since 2002. But his journey in the legal field began well before his licensure; from 1991 until he officially became licensed in 2002, Adam diligently managed our office at Leavitt Meunier Law LLC. During this period, he worked as a law clerk, where his responsibilities included analyzing medical records and crafting legal arguments for appeals, laying a solid foundation for a career in representing SSI and SSDI clients. Adam is also authorized to represent disabled veterans before the Veterans Administration.

Frequently Asked Questions
To qualify for SSDI in Louisiana, you must have a medical condition that meets the Social Security Administration's (SSA) definition of disability and have accumulated a sufficient number of work credits based on your age and the year you became disabled. Generally, you need to have worked and paid into Social Security for at least 5 out of the last 10 years before your disability began.
The time it takes to receive a decision on an SSDI claim can vary. In Louisiana, we've found that the initial application process may take 3 to 5 months, but it can extend further if your claim is denied and you need to appeal. The appeals process can take considerably longer, sometimes over a year, depending on the complexity of your case and the backlog of cases at the Louisiana adjudication level.
Yes, you can work while receiving SSDI benefits, but there are strict limits on how much you can earn. The Social Security Administration has programs such as the Trial Work Period (TWP) that allow you to test your ability to work for at least 9 months without affecting your benefits. In 2024, you can earn up to $1,550 per month (or $2,590 if you're blind) during a TWP. It's important to report any work activity to SSA to avoid overpayments.

A Great Lawyer
I applied for SS Disability in 2021 after my bicep and rotator cuff surgery, denied. My Health Insurance helped me with the appeal, denied again. Finally found a Great Lawyer and was approved today. Thanks, Adam Meunier

Louisiana Lawyers Solely Focused on SSI & SSDI
When you need a Social Security lawyer, finding one in Metairie, Louisiana, shouldn't be difficult. You can opt for one of the many large law firms that exclusively focus on disability claims. But most of them have thousands of clients to handle at a time, and if you choose one of them, you likely won't have the full attention of your attorney before your hearing. Although the team managing your case may understand your situation, it's probable that you'll communicate with a new individual each time you reach out.
Instead, choose a local law firm that effectively understands social security disability claims and is ready to give your case full attention until you get your benefits.
